Laser Spectroscopy and Optics (SOL) Group

The Head of the Laser Spectroscopy and Optics (LSO) group is Dr. Angela Staicu.

The group was founded, as Laser Spectroscopy Group (LSG), in 1975 by Prof. Mihail Lucian Pascu, within the Institute of Physics – Bucharest (IFB) which belonged, at the time, to the Romanian Academy. It functioned between 1975 and 1977 as part of IFB, between 1977 and 1996 within the Institute of Physics and Technology of Radiation Devices (IFTAR) - Laser Department and from 1996 to-date as part of the National.

In 2018 LSG took over the Laser Interferometry & Applications (ILA) Group of INFLPR which was founded in 1982 by Dr. Dan Apostol. The new group is denominated currently Laser Spectroscopy and Optics (LSO) Group and includes 17 scientists out of whom – at the moment - 14 PhD in physics, one PhD student, one assistant research scientist and one technician.

The main characteristics of the scientific activity is the approach of multidisciplinary studies using tunable lasers from UV to THz, optics and optical spectroscopy methods as well as interferometric and holographic means to develop studies in fields such as:

  • molecular and biomolecular spectroscopy
  • laser optofluidics
  • laser pharmacology for development of new methods to fight multiple drug resistance (MDR)
  • environment pollution control
  • laser equipment to monitor pollutants in air, water, soil and biosphere
  • laser biomedicine at low power levels (laserology)
  • methods and related equipment to develop transmission procedures using chaotic properties of the laser beams
  • specialized imaging systems
  • metrology grade length and surface measurement
  • We haven't got the money, so we'll have to think!

    SOL Team

Only the Best People are working hrere

SOL group has 16 members out of whom 13 are PhD in physics, one is PhD student in Optics and Spectroscopy, one follows master course in biochemistry and another is technical assistant. Prof. Mihail Lucian Pascu heads PhD in Physics, specialty “Optics, Spectroscopy, Laser, Plasma Physics”. As for specialties, members are chosen to cover the multidisciplinary approach of the research in the group: advanced optics and spectroscopy, biophysics, environment monitoring and engineering, biology, biochemistry, spectroscopy modelling of atomic and molecular systems, advanced laser physics (tunable lasers with deformable active media, micro- and nano-lasers, diode lasers with chaotic emission, THz lasers), interferometry.

The fields covered by team members are: optofluidics (surface tensions and contact angles), microfluidics (foams and emulsions), optical spectroscopy in UV – VIS – IR- NIR- FIR- THz (emission and absorption, FTIR, Raman, TLC, HPLC, LIF) biomedicine (laser medical systems, fighting drug resistance with laser instruments), laser methods in outer space, surface physics from basics to technological applications.
